There was a song about murder on a dance floor and the hope that the groove would not be killed, but its meaning was misinterpreted in Helmand in Afghanistan when Taliban members recently beheaded 17 young people for attending a late night dance party.

Sounds extreme doesn’t it? Well lest ye prematurely admonish these god-fearing men as ruthless party-poopers, it must be known that this party had women and men in the same room. Dancing together!

It’s a fucking disgrace if you ask me. Having dared to go against the social mores laid out by the rational Taliban, these rabble-rousers got what they deserved.

Now reports say that there might be other reasons for the deaths, but let’s not dwell on technicalities in case we find we can’t poke fun at fundamentalists.

Funky chicken? Wring his neck. Moon walk… He just struck down like Neil Armstrong.

One would think that forming part of the intelligent youth of today, these evil partygoers would respect their lack of the right to freedom. But such is the way with smart phones and Twitter. They just lose their shit and start partying and crying equality, and other dirty words.

I have seen it happen. Men and women will go to a party. They will talk with one another. Some will dance. Some will fuck in toilets. Sometimes there are more than two people in the toilets and there are even times, God forbid, that there are people of the same sex in there.

But this will happen. It is written in many holy books. “Beware of the disco, for there might be shit music which will cause shagging.”

And as we know the holy books are true, all of them. I support cultural relativism. And dancing leads to sex which leads to moral decay. And then of course God, who is obviously a kak dancer, will visit great vengeance and a bucket load of fury on these breakdancing infidels.

Afghan president, Hamid Karzai has ordered an investigation, according to media reports and offered the suitably ambiguous statement: “This attack shows that there are irresponsible members among the Taliban.”

But he fails to realise it is God’s will that people will not party. President of Heaven always trumps President of Afghanistan.

He pissed on paradise. And because of that he could never be treated with anything other than disdain. His lanky frame huddled over the thick slab of wooden table used in the restaurant area, as he rattled out banalities in his public school boy English.

“There’s nothing on the menu. It’s all shite mate. Trust me yeah.”

When you’ve endured a two hour drive in the thunderous rain in the back of a truck with chickens fighting for shelter beneath your feet, you’re not really in the mood for more pessimism. But there it was, dripping from his mouth as he sat in dry clothes.

Katembe in Indonesia’s Sumatra Province is beautiful. Thick greenness suggests the rugged travails that await you as you enter the jungle in search of orang-utans. But before trekking the paths that are cleared right before you by a man with a machete, you get to stop off at this backpackers – this was a while ago and I cannot remember its name – for warm food, dry sheets and the melodies of Marley so ubiquitous in South East Asia.

The point of the reverie is that despite the surroundings surpassing your imagined desires, you still have some prick that just doesn’t get it. Or has become so jaded he refuses to see it.

If you look around when you are travelling in a new country or simply in your own town or city, you see so many people who appear to be there out of a sense of obligation.

More recently, at the Victoria Falls, I saw a foursome of fatties, with long socks and bad hairstyles. The one guy walked to the edge of a viewing point turned around shouted at his wife to snap a picture and moved on.

Now one of the people I was with suggested that I needn’t drop into the depths of loathing for this sock-wearing twat, it could be that he had been there the whole week and just wanted a picture he had not yet taken. Clutching at straws considering the photo was generic.

When I got home and was relaying these thoughts to friends who had just got back from a trip to the Kruger National Park in South Africa with some international guests; they started laughing and shouting: “What fucks.”

The reason for their enthusiasm, other than my oratory skills, was that every day they were there, they had seen elephants, buck, birds and even on one day a lion kill. Or the aftermath at least. Their guests said at the end they preferred the Lion Park in Johannesburg because you got to pet Africa’s famous animal.

Travelling to experience new ideas, meet different people or see some of the most magnificent creatures on earth is the end in itself. Not some means to tick off bucket lists or make your Facebook friends jealous. If that is the motivation, stay at home or go to Disney World.

Jesus drinks Red Bull and angels want to shag men who wear Axe. The thought of this makes Christians so angry that they have vetoed our right to take the piss.

Just yesterday there was a massive backlash from religious folk not happy with Red Bull showing that Jesus’ physics-defying walk on water was made possible not from supernatural powers or, in fact, the caffeinated energy drink. It was actually because he could spot stones beneath the water’s surface. The Axe advert, banned late last year, caused a similar stench amongst the righteous for suggesting that heavenly beings (who looked a lot like Victoria’s Secret models) would fall from grace merely to satisfy their sexual cravings for shaggy-haired, skinny nerds sprayed with some aerosol deo.

There are a few obvious reasons why this religious backlash is reprehensible.

It is poor form to suggest that the commercialization of religion, as in the above adverts is any worse than the merchandising of “pro-religious” trinkets and statues, paintings and prose, sold en masse around the globe. This highlights a massive double standard. If it cracks the nod of the Vatican and is sanctioned by the Pope and the religious right, then it’s fine. But if it’s an energy drink trying to make some cash off the back of God then woe shall be upon them.

Bob Dylan knew like most of us that we sold our rights to religious indignation years ago. To borrow his words: “Flesh-coloured Christs that glow in the dark, it’s easy to see without looking too far that not much is really sacred”. To create arbitrary reasons as to why one corporate entity, which the Vatican certainly is, has the right to commercialize the images of Christ and Angels while others don’t points to a bigger issue – the fearful guarding of an alleged truth. Dogma. If the faith of Christians and other religious followers is so bountiful and their belief so true, then why get so angry when others poke a little bit of fun, or appropriate their narratives in this manner? Christians have, after all, spent centuries ensuring these symbols and stories are ubiquitous.

If I were a man of God (as you can probably tell, I am not), who believed wholeheartedly that I was made from dust and my sister from Adam’s rib and that I will sit in paradise when I die… well I would pity the fools who mocked my faith. I would laugh with a sense of great paternal condescension and say “well their free speech and hunger for cash are going to bite them in the arse come Judgment Day”. But people don’t condescend. They get angry and react from a well honed sense of dogma. And invariably end up wasting time and resources fighting a battle that should never be fought.

The message is clear: religion is sacred, but you’re only allowed to turn a profit if you’re holy enough.

If someone ever told me to consider Daisy the Cow while I glided my sharp knife through a fleshy, bloodied steak, I would have stabbed them with the same blade. Well, at least mocked them with some bushveld braaivleis bravado. But that is all in the past.

Now I am far more inclined to use that blade to exact Daisy’s revenge. So why the change? It is simple. I visited an abattoir.

I recently went to the house of death (that’s what I am calling it now despite the unpopularity at dinner parties) to become informed. I wanted to answer the chic, but essential modern questions, where does my food come from? And more importantly, how did it get there?

We all know the first bit. The animal is birthed through the regular mammalian process, it lives, it eats, it is killed and we buy it in neatly packaged anthropocentric convenience.

It is the grim details of the how, the process of slaughter that will take the cow’s severed hoof and beat your ignorant bliss into awakened activism.

Hundreds of crowded cattle are fed in excess to quickly fatten them up so more can replace them, constantly driving up abattoir’s profit margins and satiating our carnivorous desires.

Mass production is inconvenient when you show off your new vintage coffee table and one of your guests says “Wow, I love that, bought one a few weeks ago.”

It is a bleak reflection of human excess when the items of production are feeling and breathing animals with personalities.

Abattoirs will tell you that mechanisms are in place to ensure the animal experiences minimal suffering. The way the abattoir is designed means the cattle can’t see what is going on in front of them and won’t get stressed. These are convenient utterances used to sooth the animal lover’s distress.

Cattle are bunched together along an S-shape path to death. They undoubtedly become aware of their imminent demise. Daisy who is in the front enters a tiny box restricting all her movement. It’s at this point that Daisy’s kinsfolk start frantically trying to backpedal. They’ve seen and smelt it. They know it is coming. And they are thinking for the loathing of beef stroganoff how do we escape?

The stun-gun shoots Daisy into unconsciousness. The loud thud of her body will crush the brazen carnivore out of you. While still alive, but stunned, Daisy’s ankle is shackled with a crude chain. She is then hoisted onto the production line. Her throat is slit shedding 16 litres of blood from her still warm, maimed and undignified body.

A small blade whittles away her skin. Before the process is completed patches of brown hang loosely from her fleshy mass. Her tail limply sways with the changing motion of the knife.

The saw’s electric shrill sounds Daisy’s last moment of being if not alive, at least whole. Metal teeth hungrily feast along a straight line splitting her in two. She is neatly packaged and ready for your bloodied pleasure.

If it sounds violent, inhumane and reprehensible, it is because the way winged and hooved animals are kept and slaughtered is exactly that.

Consider the person who jumps out of airplanes weeping with self-righteousness that they are saving the rhinos. Another kisses his little pups and kittens as if they were one of the family. They both sit down and talk about how wonderful animals are while they commit a treacherous unintended irony. Mmm Daisy tastes good.

Getting the back of your car smashed by an unlicensed and uninsured driver hardly seems a likely source of hope for humanity, but strange things happen.

A little while back I was heading for a romantic lunch with my betty, yes betty, on the Midlands Meander. I stopped at a yield sign to let someone through. Suddenly we felt our necks snap back in unison before the sound of screeching tires registered.

My shaking hands reached for the door to climb out and question what the hell just happened. A very apologetic man in his early 30s said he was really sorry, he was to blame and we will sort this mess out.

Being a permissibly untrusting man in this situation I would not let him leave until the police had arrived.

Two guys, the peeps I yielded for, stayed until the police came because they, like the rest of us have learnt trust usually results in pain or money loss.

The police came, after a long wait, and added little value to the scene. I had to direct them to check the crasher’s license, which he did not have and show them the crumpled and expired license disc on crasher’s car.

The po-po put him in the back of the van, which I feel really bad for now, and we all went to the station.

The contextual ramble is now finished and the grand optimism in people can begin.

This man, the crasher, phoned several times to check on my stiff-necked woman and what we should do to sort out the car.

He is a teacher in a rural school in Kwa-Zulu Natal, is getting married soon and plans to have a child only a few years after marriage to spend more time with his wife, whom he deeply loves.

After numerous phone calls he sent good news. His bank loan of R13 000, the damage was severe, was approved and he could pay the panel beaters.

I have third party insurance, he has none. But he as he had promised sorted everything out.

The real pain from all of this was my guilt at showing such distrust for people. We are entitled to be so defensive and suspicious, given daily news reports and stories from family and friends.

But it just so happens that every once and a while, people respond to situations how you believe, and hope you would.
